Solo Parent Assembly Highlights Needs of Single Parents

The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) held the Solo Parent Assembly Meeting and Orientation on December 9, 2021, at the Saturnino G. Fernandez Memorial Sports and Cultural Center in Poblacion, Lezo, Aklan.

Mrs. Wenna Mae B. Manares, MSWDO, stated that holding such an activity is in line with the local government unit of Lezo’s participation in the 2022 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women.

She stated that the activity educated solo parents on Republic Act (RA) 11861, or the Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act, which amended Republic Act (RA) 8972, or the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000. The law promotes the rights of Filipino single parents and ensures that they receive adequate social protection programs from the government.

During the activity, the agency was able to identify issues and problems affecting solo parents, and it recommended and suggested solutions to their problems.

She stated that “it is our responsibility to ensure that all sectors of our community have equal opportunity, equal access, and equal priority.”

She also expressed her gratitude to Mayor Mary Lenette R. Fernandez for her unwavering support for the municipality’s programs and projects for single parents. (By Ernan T. Baldomero)
